Spainhour Joins Men's Basketball Staff As Director Of Operations
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Dan Spainhour, who has experience as an educator, high school director of athletics and high school basketball coach, was named the Director of Basketball Operations for the Florida State University men's basketball team as announced by the Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. He will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the men's basketball office and will serve as the director of the annual Leonard Hamilton basketball camps for boys.
Spainhour comes to Florida State from the world of athletic business
where he founded two companies which make him very qualified for the
demanding position of Director of Operations with the Seminole men's
basketball program. He created and developed Educational Coaching and
Business Communications - a company that specializes in informational
manuals for educators, parents, coaches and athletes - and East Coast
Basketball Camps - which is now one of the largest and most renowned
basketball camps in the Mid-Atlantic within the last seven years. Spainhour
has also authored three books including How to Run A Basketball Camp: A
Guide To Directing a Successful Camp.
Prior to branching into private business,
Spainhour was the Director of Athletics and Head Boy's Basketball Coach at
West Stokes High School in King, N.C., from 1998-2003. As the Director of
Athletics he managed 32 athletic teams, organized a community program to
help assist the department and its teams and established funding and
scholarship guidelines for the newly opened school. As the basketball coach
he was named the 2002 Conference Coach of the Year and guided the team to
the state playoffs in the school's first year of existence and into the
sectional semifinals in his third season.
Spainhour began his high school coaching career at Bishop McGuinness High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1982. He led his teams to a pair of state title game appearances, three conference championships, two conference tournament championships and to four 20-win seasons from 1982-95. Spainhour was also the Director of Athletics, head baseball coach and founded a highly successful basketball camp at the school.
Spainhour was the recipient of the Governor's Laurel Wreath Award as an Ambassador of Athletics in the State of North Carolina, was appointed to the state's agency governing private school athletics and elected to the committee which oversaw state sectional basketball tournaments in the state during his career. He has a varsity coaching record of 233-133.
Spainhour earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from High Point College in 1982 and his Master's Degree in sports administration from the University of Miami in 1998. While at Miami, he served as a student assistant under Hamilton where he helped the Hurricanes earn their first NCAA Tournament bid in 38 years.
